I’m often asked what are my favourite types of wedding cakes to create, and without question they would be semi-naked wedding cakes. They give such a natural feel and fit in with just about every type of venue from a marquee to a castle wedding.

The combination of a natural looking cake with beautiful fresh flowers is a sure winner. I’m a creative sole and in my past have dabbled with a little floral art so getting the chance to decorate my cakes using flowers is a dream.

Another plus point of using fresh flowers is to continue the theme your florals create throughout your venue with your cake matching perfectly.

Many people believe you can’t do much with a semi-naked cake but its quite the opposite, they are a blank canvas which can be decorated with all types of flowers and foliage and I regularly use fruit or items which will create an aroma too, recently I decorated a cake with lemon slices and rosemary and the smell was amazing.

Semi-Naked cakes can be dripped and the image below shows a gold painted drip which matched the room perfectly with its gold embossed wallpaper.

Semi-naked cakes also work well if creating a tablescape, bringing the flowers and foliage down over a base and onto the table, and using other edibles such as berries and shortbread hearts to create a scene.

If you are on a tighter budget this is a great option as they are more budget friendly than and iced cake with sugar flowers. The trend for a more natural look is huge at the moment and long may it continue.
