I often get asked what is my favourite type of cake to create and for me it is Semi-Naked Wedding cakes. I love the natural feel to them and coupled with stunning fresh blooms you’d be hard to beat it.
It is such a versatile design which fits practically every venue from a rustic barn to a castle wedding. Although it can look simple in design there really is nowhere to hide, it needs to be perfectly presented and 100% level, if not you’d spot it in a minute.
My favourite way to decorate a semi naked cake is with fresh flowers, using matching flowers to the venue and bouquets helps tie in the whole wedding. The addition of a natural hessian cake bunting or a small wooden sign makes for a perfect cake topper if you choose to have one.
Other ways in which I like to enhance the design of a Semi Naked Wedding cake is to use fresh seasonal berries, they give a pop of colour. Or if you want a more sophisticated look gold or silver drips adds that air of elegance.
I would always suggest to stick with cake flavours that give a paler sponge, with semi naked cakes you see parts of the cake through the buttercream icing, as dark cakes such as chocolate can give an almost burnt look to a cake. You can’t go far wrong with a traditional vanilla or lemon cake or for a more tropical flavour white chocolate and passionfruit or cherry bakewell is a winner.
When displaying a semi-naked cake I would make suggestions around what type of venue your wedding is at. For a marquee, garden or barn wedding I would go with a rustic log slice, for a hotel a pedestal cake stand and for a castle or grand house a vintage silver cake stand.
