I was very excited to be asked to take part in a photo shoot this week for a stunning venue in Dorset, The Millstream Bistro in Wimborne. The bistro sits on the River Stour offering amazing views and is situated within the grounds of Walford Mill Art Gallery.
This venue is pretty local to me, so I know it well. Straight away I knew what sort of cake would be a perfect match. Situated on the River with lots of old oak trees and adorned with wisteria it had to be a rustic cake decorated with fresh flowers.
With my theme of Rustic in mind, I also looked at what trends were showing for bookings in 2019 & 2020 and at high profile events that have recently happened, in particular the Royal Wedding, Harry & Meghan’s choice of cake design will sure to be huge for next year.
So I grabbed the bull by the horns, and did something I thought i’d never do and that was to go with high natural edges on a cake, left as they were and not trimmed to my usually sharp and neat standard. It’s fair to say several stages in the process I was ready with a sharp knife to just take off the ‘messy’ edges but I stepped away and rolled with it.
I chose pink peonies as they are one of my favourite flowers coupled with delicate miniature roses. Gold is also a huge trend for this year but it can be tricky to incorporate, no-one wants the brassy chav look for their wedding day, so I found an amazing antique gold tray which was perfect to display the cake.
I’m really excited to see the professional photo’s but throughout the post you’ll see some photo’s the venue took on the day.
The Millstream Bistro can cater for intimate weddings comfortably sitting around 40 inside or for those larger weddings a marquee in the grounds is perfect. They also host many events and I can’t think of a more perfect venue for a birthday party or family afternoon tea or if like me you just want to try their delicious food, pop along and try for yourselves, much of their menu is locally sourced. I can be a little critical of cake when I trying it in cafes but their cake is good!
So here it is going Rustic on the River.
